Window wells in Edmonton are designed to hold back soil and protect basement windows at or below grade level from water intrusion, allowing the grade of your home to slope downward and allow water drainage toward the street and away from the basement. When these “wells” are installed, ideally using steel anchor bolts attaching the window well to your house, they are secure and stay securely attached. The window well is then filled up with gravel and is ideally connected to your home’s weeping tile system allowing any water entering this well instead of leaking through your window – to drain down towards your weeping tile and eventually sump pump.

Window wells are an intricate part of your home’s foundation drainage system, allowing the grade to be built up around your home and windows, to help shed water away from leaking into your basement and to prevent water from entering your home’s windows.
What types of Window Wells Are Available in Edmonton?
The most common window well is a galvanized steel window well. These are the most regularly used because they are the most economical for typical window well installations in Edmonton. In addition to regular galvanized steel window wells, Abalon can provide a Powder-Coated window well solution for those wanting “Color Matching” of their house, siding, or trim. The second most common type of window well installed for residential homeowners is a wooden window well. Made out of treated lumber, wood window wells work great to match a specific style the homeowner is looking to achieve, or can be a more economical alternative when the need for a very large window well is required, as custom galvanized window wells can become costly and require re-enforcing.
The third type of most common window well used in Edmonton, Alberta is a concrete window well formed during construction around sidewalks, and driveways, and can be custom formed into a smaller space that matches the house’s exterior concrete finish.
Concrete window wells are a great choice when building a home, as they are securely attached to the foundation and driveway or sidewalk, but can be more costly to remove or replace if required.
What is the cost of installing new window wells in Edmonton and the Surrounding area?
The cost of installing new window wells in Edmonton can range from $300 – $1000+ depending on the type of window well, and if your home has already had existing window wells installed. The most important factors that affect the price of window well installation in Edmonton are these:
1.) Type of Window Well Desired. (Galvanized vs Wooden vs. concrete). Do you also wish to Powder Coat your window well a custom colour?.
2.) The size of your window well. If your home has large (at or below grade level) windows, then the size of the window well increases and so does the price.)
3.) Did your home come with window wells when originally built? This factor can also be the most important in determining the price of installing or replacing window wells for your home. This is because window wells require drainage within them (a bed of gravel that has a drainage pipe such as weeping tile or clean gravel), which allows water entering the window well to drain down to your home’s weeping tile system. If your home does not have weeping tile or a sump pump, then additional work and costs can be necessary to achieve the desired goal of controlling water drainage around your home, and windows with proper grading.
My window wells are detaching from my house, what do I do?
Signs or symptoms or detaching window wells from a residential house include the window wells pulling away from your house. When originally installed, contractors can forget to install multiple anchor bolts or don’t use sufficient methods to correctly attach window wells to houses. This can lead to unsightly appearances, and the window wells not performing their intended goal of keeping water away from your windows, and draining away. The proper technique Abalon utilizes to install window wells onto a foundation includes a minimum of (2) 3/8 inch galvanized anchor bolts attached securely to your concrete foundation. Depending on the size of your window wells, 2 anchor bolts per side, and vertical steel re-enforcing may be added to the window well to prevent buckling of deeper window wells, and secure attachment of larger window wells.
My window wells are filling with water, what can I do to fix this?
The best first approach to unclog, plugged window wells is to inspect them for debris that could be clogging a bed of gravel that should have been installed within the window well. If you notice there is not sufficient gravel within your window well, calling a foundation repair expert such as Abalon is the next best approach to doing it yourself.
Abalon’s professional estimators will inspect and offer solutions to first test, and then potentially repair your home’s window well drainage system.
